This Gourmet Mandoline Is Light Enough For Travel But Tough Enough For Everyday Use

Voiced by Amazon Polly

I travel throughout the year, usually internationally. On longer stays, I like to take a few essentials with me such as my portable induction cooktop, my Henckels, and this mandoline is also good to go with a safety case that makes it suitable for either storage or travel. The sharp blades and several settings combined with its simplicity and ease of cleaning makes it a great choice.

I have never heard of the company or model, Swissmar Borner V-1001, but I imagine it must be popular in Europe. Like my J.A. Henckels knives, it is made in Germany.

The mandoline, suitable for home use, is very light and feels flimsy, but it actually works very well. I have had it over a year now and it still works like new. The blades are very sharp and it makes quick work of vegetables. I have owned several mandolines and this one is the simplest in design. The only downside is that it is more limited in the cut patterns. It can slice to 2 different thicknesses, and julienne to 2 different sizes. No crinkle cuts or precise adjustments. For example, if you want to make french fries it will only make the really skinny versions. You set thickness and cuts by 3 interchangeable plates.

You aren’t supposed to put it in the dishwasher but I admit I threw it in a couple of times and it held up well. The storage case is also pretty cool. Even if you need a big fancy mandoline, I still recommend this one as a second. You will probably end up using it 90% of the time. Still, for most circumstances it will be all you need.
